Why self-publish?

Traditional publishing vs. self-publishing

Traditional publishing doesn’t make it easy for first time writers to get their foot in the door. You need to find an agent willing to take you on (who may ask for substantial changes to your work) and then the agent needs to find you a publisher. It can take years, loads of soul-crushing rejections, and you’re not guaranteed to make much money, especially with both the agent and the publisher taking percentages of your earnings.

The upside to traditional publishing is that you may get a small advance (a lump sum paid ahead of time) and a lot of the decisions are done for you like editing, cover design and formatting. The publisher also takes on those costs for you.

The downside is that you don’t have control of your book. For some, this is a relief, and for others, this is a nightmare.

What about companies offering to self-publish my book for me?

Any “publishers” asking for money in return for self-publishing your book are scammers.

In the industry we call them “vanity” publishers because they prey on first time authors who are flattered by them. They often try to charge you £1000s to self-publish your book for you, and often take a chunk of royalties or make you sign an exclusivity or rights contract with them too.

True self-publishing is entirely free - ish! The actual act of publishing on Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing, Ingram Spark or other sites is free. But the services you might need to pay for aren’t. For example, cover design, formatting, editing and marketing.

With self-publishing you can control all of these elements, and how much they cost. Naturally the better the cover, quality of the text and the finish, the more sales you are likely to make, but that is up to you.

Self-publishing can seem daunting, but with a consultant to guide you, it doesn’t have to be.

In most cases, one or two sessions followed by free email advice should be sufficient. If you need more assistance, we can tailor long-term packages to suit your needs.

We want to help you get your manuscript in shape and to your end goal as quickly and painlessly as possible.

Our primary income source is our own book sales. We have no interest in gouging fellow indie authors for money. We want to see you succeed, and our industry thrive.
